SUMMARY:Public Transport Group Trip to Whitchurch
DESCRIPTION:Shrewsbury & West Shropshire CAMRA social and beer scoring trip by public transport from Shrewsbury to Whitchurch. Members and non-members welcome! \n\n\n\nWe have seven pubs to visit in Whitchurch\, including three current Good Beer Guide entries. Also\, the Crafty Dragon have very kindly agreed to open an hour earlier for us at 3pm. \n\n\n\nTravel Information: \n\n\n\nMost people travelling from Shrewsbury and beyond will be getting to Whitchurch by train\, leaving a 10 minute walk from Whitchurch railway station into the town. The other option is by bus\, which may be cheaper and takes you right into Whitchurch town centre\, but takes nearly three times as long as the train. \n\n\n\nShrewsbury to Whitchurch by Train:   From platform 7B\, get the 10:19 which arrives in Whitchurch at 10:47 \n\n\n\nShrewsbury to Whitchurch by Bus:    From Stand L at Shrewsbury Bus Station\, take either the Arriva 511 bus at 9:45 arriving at Whitchurch Bus Station at 11:10\, or Arriva 512 at 10:45 arriving in Whitchurch at 12:00 \n\n\n\nWhitchurch to Shrewsbury by Train:   Either the 16:27 arriving in Shrewsbury at 16:46\, or the 17:41 arriving in Shrewsbury at 18:12\, or the 18:28 arriving in Shrewsbury at 18:49 \n\n\n\nWhitchurch to Shrewsbury by Bus:    The 511 bus from the Bus Station outside Tesco at 16:32 arriving in Shrewsbury at 18:02 \n\n\n\nPubs: \n\n\n\nWe will start off in the Red Cow at 11am. DESCRIPTION:Shrewsbury and West Shropshire CAMRA and friends trip to Loughborough ( loogabarooga) Saturday 6th December to sample town centre pubs. \n\n\n\nFollowing discussion at the AGM\, travel to and from Loughborough is recommended by rail from Shrewsbury\, OR Wem/ Whitchurch. The organiser\, Philip Hamson\, will be waiting in Loughborough at the railway station whichever route you take. \n\n\n\nSuggested train from Shrewsbury is the 08:59 to Birmingham New Street\, then B’ham New St to Leicester\, then finally Leicester to Loughborough arriving at 11:.26. Return by the same route leaves Loughborough at 17:32 or better\, 18:.30. \n\n\n\nSuggested train from Wem via Whitchurch is the 08:35 to Crewe. 50 minutes wait in the coffee shop/waiting room\, then Crewe to Derby\, Derby to Loughborough – arriving in Loughborough at 11:51. Philip will be waiting for you outside Loughborough Station. Members and non-members welcome! \n\n\n\nThe final PTG trip of the year will be to Ludlow on Thursday 18th December. Ludlow is one of our most popular PTG destinations and we will have 16 pubs serving real ale to choose from in or near the town centre\, including two Good Beer Guide pubs. The Olde Bull Ring Tavern and the Compasses have also just re-opened\, but the George is still closed. \n\n\n\nTravel Information \n\n\n\nMost people travelling from Shrewsbury and beyond will be getting to Ludlow by train\, leaving a few minutes walk from Ludlow railway station to Ludlow Brewery\, which will be our first beer stop. The other option is by bus\, which takes 1 hr 15 mins and drops you off by the railway station. \n\n\n\nShrewsbury to Ludlow by Train:   From platform 4\, get the 10:47 which arrives in Ludlow at 11:17 \n\n\n\nShrewsbury to Ludlow by Bus:    From Stand N at Shrewsbury Bus Station\, take the Minsterley Motors 435 bus at 9:55 arriving in Ludlow adjacent to the railway station at 11:10 \n\n\n\nLudlow to Shrewsbury by Train:   Choice of either the 16:20 arriving in Shrewsbury at 16:54\, or the 16:52 arriving in Shrewsbury at 17:24\, or the 17:19 arriving in Shrewsbury at 17:46\, or the 17:43 arriving in Shrewsbury at 18:18 \n\n\n\nLudlow to Shrewsbury by Bus:    Minsterley Motors 435 bus from outside the Compasses pub on Corve Street either at 15:55 arriving in Shrewsbury bus station at 17:11\, or at 16:55 arriving in Shrewsbury at 18:11 \n\n\n\nPubs \n\n\n\nA general order of pubs is shown below. We will meet at Ludlow Brewery around 11:15am and stay there until around midday. DESCRIPTION:Our annual Christmas Eve Shrewsbury walkabout\, which gives everyone a chance to meet up for a few drinks before the Christmas break. Also handy for combining a bit of last minute Christmas shopping with some pubs! \n\n\n\nThis year\, we will be starting the walkabout at our Shrewsbury Pub of the Year\, the Prince of Wales on Bynner Street at 1pm. After that we will go to the Cross Foxes before heading into town. We are then likely to visit the Nag’s Head\, Cromwell’s\, Three Fishes\, Admiral Benbow and the newly-opened Coach and Horses.  \n\n\n\nIf you are short on time\, feel free to join us just for one or two pubs. DESCRIPTION:We will once again be having the Branch Annual Dinner on Friday 16th January at the Prince Rupert Hotel in Shrewsbury. 7pm for 7:30 sit down. Real Ale will once again be provided by us\, proceeds of sales to branch funds. SUMMARY:Public Transport Group Trip to Stourbridge
DESCRIPTION:Shrewsbury & West Shropshire CAMRA social trip by public transport from Shrewsbury to Stourbridge. This is the first of our out-of-area PTG trips for the year. Members and non-members welcome! \n\n\n\nWe have seven pubs on the list to visit\, with more options available if required. The seven pubs include five current Good Beer Guide pubs\, and pubs with beers from Bathams\, Black Country Ales\, Fownd\, Craddock’s\, etc. So it should be a good day. \n\n\n\nTRAVEL INFORMATION \n\n\n\nThe two main options for getting to Stourbridge are by train to Stourbridge Town station\, or by train to Wolverhampton and then bus to Stourbridge.  \n\n\n\nThe train takes 1hr 34m with two changes\, and includes a trip on the Stourbridge Town shuttle.  \n\n\n\nThe train and bus option will take around 2 hours to get to Stourbridge but is probably a bit cheaper\, and also gives people the option of stopping off at further pubs on the way back to Wolverhampton. \n\n\n\nShrewsbury to Stourbridge Town by Train: \n\n\n\n\n09:59 from Shrewsbury\, arriving at Stourbridge Town (after 2 changes) at 11:33   (change at Smethwick Galton Bridge at 10:52\, 19 min wait for the 11:11 to Stourbridge Junction arriving at 11:27\, 3 min wait for 11:30 Shuttle (every 10 mins) to Stourbridge Town arriving at 11:33)\n\n\n\n\nShrewsbury to Stourbridge by Train & Bus: \n\n\n\n\n09:30 train from Shrewsbury\, arriving in Wolverhampton at 10:10\, then walk to bus stop to get the No.16 Bus at 10:35\, arriving in Stourbridge at 11:40\n\n\n\n\nThe last pub of the day is opposite the Stourbridge Junction station approach\, so those getting the train back can go from there. For those going back by bus\, they can either take the shuttle train\, bus or walk back to Stourbridge bus station\, before taking the bus back to Wolverhampton. \n\n\n\nStourbridge Junction to Shrewsbury by Train:   From Stourbridge Junction\, choice of: \n\n\n\n\n16:30 and change at Smethwick Galton Bridge to get the 16:59 arriving in Shrewsbury at 17:53\n\n\n\n16:50 and change at Smethwick Galton Bridge to get the 17:20 to Sandwell and Dudley\, and change again to get the 17:30 arriving in Shrewsbury at 18:21\n\n\n\n17:30 and change at Smethwick Galton Bridge to get the 17:59 arriving in Shrewsbury at 18:53\n\n\n\n\nStourbridge to Shrewsbury by Bus & Train:   No.16 Bus from Stourbridge bus station\, choice of:  \n\n\n\n\n15:45 bus arriving Wolverhampton at 16:56\, then Train at 17:12 arriving Shrewsbury at 17:53\n\n\n\n16:10 bus arriving Wolverhampton at 17:21\, then Train at 17:41 arriving Shrewsbury at 18:21\n\n\n\n16:25 bus arriving Wolverhampton at 17:35\, then Train at 17:57 arriving Shrewsbury at 18:47\n\n\n\n\nNOTE: Please double check your train and/or bus times just in case there are any mistakes with the above times. \n\n\n\nPUBS \n\n\n\nFor anyone getting to Stourbridge earlier than 11:30 when the main group arrives\, there is also a Spoons in town (Chequers – open at 8:00) and another GBG pub (Hop Vault – open at 11:00).  \n\n\n\nThe Seven Stars Black Country Ales pub in Oldswinford will be our final stop. It has up to 22 beers on and is opposite Stourbridge Junction station\, so people can spend as long as they want there before heading back.  \n\n\n\nA suggested order of pubs is shown below: \n\n\n\nRed House   (opens at 11:00)   – up to 8 ales eg Enville\, Fixed Wheel \n\n\n\nWeavers Real Ale House   (opens at 12:00)   – GBG – Fownd ales \n\n\n\nDuke William   (opens at 12:00)   – Craddock’s beers \n\n\n\nRoyal Exchange   (opens at 12:00)  – GBG – Bathams \n\n\n\nQueens Head   (opens at 12:00)  – GBG – Black Country Ales  \n\n\n\nWaggon and Horses   (opens at 12:00)   – GBG  \n\n\n\nWe can then walk (15 mins) to the final pub\, or walk to the station (5 mins) and take the train (every 10 mins) to Stourbridge Junction\, or walk to Church Street (5 mins) and get the No.7 or No.142 bus. \n\n\n\nSeven Stars   (opens at 12:00)   – GBG – Black Country Ales – up to 22 ales  \n\n\n\n   \n\n\n\nIf this is your first PTG trip and you don’t know anyone else who is going\, please email the PTG organiser so arrangements can be made to look out for you either at Shrewsbury station\, or at the far end. \n\n\n\nFor more information about our Public Transport Group (PTG) trips\, please see the About Our Events page. DESCRIPTION:Did you volunteer at Shrewsbury CAMRA Beer and Cider Festival in 2025? If so\, you are invited to join us on a trip to Tewkesbury Winter Ales Festival on Saturday 7th February 2026.  \n\n\n\nTo thank you\, we will pay for a minibus to take us there. Entry is free to CAMRA members (bring your card)\, but you will need to pay £5 for your glass and £5 for your first set of beer/cider tokens.  \n\n\n\nThe bus will leave from the bus stop layby on Smithfield Road\, just the other side of the Frankwell footbridge from the Salopian Bar at 9am. SUMMARY:Public Transport Group Trip to Manchester
DESCRIPTION:Shrewsbury & West Shropshire CAMRA social trip by public transport from Shrewsbury to Manchester. This is the second and last out-of-area PTG trip for the year. Members and non-members welcome! \n\n\n\nWe are going to be visiting some well-known pubs in the southern part of the city centre\, including three with historic features and four currently in the Good Beer Guide. \n\n\n\nTRAVEL INFORMATION \n\n\n\nWe will be taking the train to Manchester Piccadilly\, then another to Manchester Oxford Road to save a bit of walking. All the pubs are within around 10 minutes walk of Oxford Road station.  \n\n\n\nThe cheapest option seems to be to get a split ticket via Wilmslow\, so a return from Shrewsbury to Wilmslow\, then another return from Wilmslow to Manchester Oxford Road. This will take advantage of the cheaper travel within the Greater Manchester area. \n\n\n\nShrewsbury to Manchester: \n\n\n\n\n09:54 from Shrewsbury arriving at Manchester Piccadilly at 11:13\, then the 11:21 to Oxford Road arriving at 11:23 (or there’s another one at 11:33 if we miss the 11:21)\n\n\n\n\n(note that if you’re booking online\, the journey planner won’t show the 11:21 to Oxford Road as it doesn’t give the minimum 10 minute transfer time\, so it will show the 11:33 instead) \n\n\n\nManchester to Shrewsbury: \n\n\n\n\n17:13 from Manchester Oxford Road arriving at Manchester Piccadilly at 17:15\, then 17:30 from Piccadilly to Shrewsbury arriving at 18:49\n\n\n\n18:13 from Manchester Oxford Road arriving at Manchester Piccadilly at 18:15\, then 18:30 from Piccadilly to Shrewsbury arriving at 19:44\n\n\n\n\nThere is also a 16:13 option from Oxford Road\, changing at Piccadilly again and arriving in Shrewsbury at 17:44\, for anyone that wants to get back earlier. \n\n\n\nPUBS \n\n\n\nA suggested order of pubs is shown below. Note that the times shown are approximate but they’ve been included just to indicate where the main group are likely to be at any particular time. If we get split up\, maybe aim to meet up again at the Grey Horse at 3pm. \n\n\n\n11:30 – Paramount (Spoons) – possible quick stop12:00 – Pevril of the Peak – there when it opens at 12:0012:45 – Britons Protection13:30 – City Arms14:15 – Old Monkey / Circus Tavern15:00 – Grey Horse15:45 – Lass o’Gowrie16:30 – Salisbury Ale House \n\n\n\nand for those staying a bit later\, the following are nearby: \n\n\n\n – Oxford Road Tap – Temple – no real ale (may have bottled Czech or Belgium beers) but interesting setting in what was an underground public convenience – Bundobust Brewery \n\n\n\nUnfortunately\, the only pub open before 12pm in the area we are going to is the Paramount\, the Wetherspoons on Oxford Street. So we will go for a quick drink at the Spoons after we arrive at Oxford Road station\, and then walk to the Pevril of the Peak for 12pm. If the trains are running late\, we may have to go straight to the Pevril of the Peak and wait for it to open. \n\n\n\nThe Old Monkey and Circus Tavern have been grouped together due to time constraints. The Monkey has a wider beer selection but the Circus is an historic pub\, and may have the new Boddingtons on cask for anyone that fancies trying it. So people can stay in one or the other\, or have a quick half in both. DESCRIPTION:A visit to the Salopian Brewery in Hadnall for members of the Shrewsbury and West Shropshire CAMRA branch. The bar will be open exclusively for branch members from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Free pizza will be provided by the branch. \n\n\n\nWe will be getting the Arriva 511 bus from Shrewsbury Bus Station at 6:15pm\, arriving in Hadnall at 6:33pm\, leaving a few minutes walk to the brewery. SUMMARY:Public Transport Group Trip to Oswestry
DESCRIPTION:Shrewsbury & West Shropshire CAMRA social and beer scoring trip by public transport from Shrewsbury to Oswestry. Please note that this is a Friday trip. Members and non-members welcome! \n\n\n\nWe have up to 9 real ale pubs to visit in Oswestry\, including the Bailey Head (CAMRA’s National Pub of the Year 2024)\, two other Good Beer Guide pubs (Oak Inn and Bell Hotel)\, and the Griffin which has been voted our branch Pub of the Season for Spring 2026.  \n\n\n\nTRAVEL INFORMATION \n\n\n\nMeet at Shrewsbury bus station just after 10am\, to get the Arriva X5 bus to Oswestry (usually from Stand G).  \n\n\n\nShrewsbury to Oswestry: \n\n\n\n\n10:15 from Shrewsbury\, arriving at the Bear Hotel stop in Oswestry at 11:13\n\n\n\n\nOswestry to Shrewsbury: \n\n\n\n\n16:41 from opposite the Black Lion\, arriving at Shrewsbury bus station at 17:34\n\n\n\n17:26 from opposite the Black Lion\, arriving at Shrewsbury bus station at 18:19\n\n\n\n\nPUBS \n\n\n\nThe suggested order of pubs is shown below.
