SUMMARY:Public Transport Group Trip to Manchester
DESCRIPTION:Shrewsbury & West Shropshire CAMRA social trip by public transport from Shrewsbury to Manchester. This is the second and last out-of-area PTG trip for the year. Members and non-members welcome! \n\n\n\nWe are going to be visiting some well-known pubs in the southern part of the city centre\, including three with historic features and four currently in the Good Beer Guide. \n\n\n\nTRAVEL INFORMATION \n\n\n\nWe will be taking the train to Manchester Piccadilly\, then another to Manchester Oxford Road to save a bit of walking. All the pubs are within around 10 minutes walk of Oxford Road station.  \n\n\n\nThe cheapest option seems to be to get a split ticket via Wilmslow\, so a return from Shrewsbury to Wilmslow\, then another return from Wilmslow to Manchester Oxford Road. This will take advantage of the cheaper travel within the Greater Manchester area. \n\n\n\nShrewsbury to Manchester: \n\n\n\n\n09:54 from Shrewsbury arriving at Manchester Piccadilly at 11:13\, then the 11:21 to Oxford Road arriving at 11:23 (or there’s another one at 11:33 if we miss the 11:21)\n\n\n\n\n(note that if you’re booking online\, the journey planner won’t show the 11:21 to Oxford Road as it doesn’t give the minimum 10 minute transfer time\, so it will show the 11:33 instead) \n\n\n\nManchester to Shrewsbury: \n\n\n\n\n17:13 from Manchester Oxford Road arriving at Manchester Piccadilly at 17:15\, then 17:30 from Piccadilly to Shrewsbury arriving at 18:49\n\n\n\n18:13 from Manchester Oxford Road arriving at Manchester Piccadilly at 18:15\, then 18:30 from Piccadilly to Shrewsbury arriving at 19:44\n\n\n\n\nThere is also a 16:13 option from Oxford Road\, changing at Piccadilly again and arriving in Shrewsbury at 17:44\, for anyone that wants to get back earlier. \n\n\n\nPUBS \n\n\n\nA suggested order of pubs is shown below. Note that the times shown are approximate but they’ve been included just to indicate where the main group are likely to be at any particular time. If we get split up\, maybe aim to meet up again at the Grey Horse at 3pm. \n\n\n\n11:30 – Paramount (Spoons) – possible quick stop12:00 – Pevril of the Peak – there when it opens at 12:0012:45 – Britons Protection13:30 – City Arms14:15 – Old Monkey / Circus Tavern15:00 – Grey Horse15:45 – Lass o’Gowrie16:30 – Salisbury Ale House \n\n\n\nand for those staying a bit later\, the following are nearby: \n\n\n\n – Oxford Road Tap – Temple – no real ale (may have bottled Czech or Belgium beers) but interesting setting in what was an underground public convenience – Bundobust Brewery \n\n\n\nUnfortunately\, the only pub open before 12pm in the area we are going to is the Paramount\, the Wetherspoons on Oxford Street. So we will go for a quick drink at the Spoons after we arrive at Oxford Road station\, and then walk to the Pevril of the Peak for 12pm. If the trains are running late\, we may have to go straight to the Pevril of the Peak and wait for it to open. \n\n\n\nThe Old Monkey and Circus Tavern have been grouped together due to time constraints. The Monkey has a wider beer selection but the Circus is an historic pub\, and may have the new Boddingtons on cask for anyone that fancies trying it. So people can stay in one or the other\, or have a quick half in both. SUMMARY:Public Transport Group Trip to Stourbridge
DESCRIPTION:Shrewsbury & West Shropshire CAMRA social trip by public transport from Shrewsbury to Stourbridge. This is the first of our out-of-area PTG trips for the year. Members and non-members welcome! \n\n\n\nWe have seven pubs on the list to visit\, with more options available if required. The seven pubs include five current Good Beer Guide pubs\, and pubs with beers from Bathams\, Black Country Ales\, Fownd\, Craddock’s\, etc. So it should be a good day. \n\n\n\nTRAVEL INFORMATION \n\n\n\nThe two main options for getting to Stourbridge are by train to Stourbridge Town station\, or by train to Wolverhampton and then bus to Stourbridge.  \n\n\n\nThe train takes 1hr 34m with two changes\, and includes a trip on the Stourbridge Town shuttle.  \n\n\n\nThe train and bus option will take around 2 hours to get to Stourbridge but is probably a bit cheaper\, and also gives people the option of stopping off at further pubs on the way back to Wolverhampton. \n\n\n\nShrewsbury to Stourbridge Town by Train: \n\n\n\n\n09:59 from Shrewsbury\, arriving at Stourbridge Town (after 2 changes) at 11:33   (change at Smethwick Galton Bridge at 10:52\, 19 min wait for the 11:11 to Stourbridge Junction arriving at 11:27\, 3 min wait for 11:30 Shuttle (every 10 mins) to Stourbridge Town arriving at 11:33)\n\n\n\n\nShrewsbury to Stourbridge by Train & Bus: \n\n\n\n\n09:30 train from Shrewsbury\, arriving in Wolverhampton at 10:10\, then walk to bus stop to get the No.16 Bus at 10:35\, arriving in Stourbridge at 11:40\n\n\n\n\nThe last pub of the day is opposite the Stourbridge Junction station approach\, so those getting the train back can go from there. For those going back by bus\, they can either take the shuttle train\, bus or walk back to Stourbridge bus station\, before taking the bus back to Wolverhampton. \n\n\n\nStourbridge Junction to Shrewsbury by Train:   From Stourbridge Junction\, choice of: \n\n\n\n\n16:30 and change at Smethwick Galton Bridge to get the 16:59 arriving in Shrewsbury at 17:53\n\n\n\n16:50 and change at Smethwick Galton Bridge to get the 17:20 to Sandwell and Dudley\, and change again to get the 17:30 arriving in Shrewsbury at 18:21\n\n\n\n17:30 and change at Smethwick Galton Bridge to get the 17:59 arriving in Shrewsbury at 18:53\n\n\n\n\nStourbridge to Shrewsbury by Bus & Train:   No.16 Bus from Stourbridge bus station\, choice of:  \n\n\n\n\n15:45 bus arriving Wolverhampton at 16:56\, then Train at 17:12 arriving Shrewsbury at 17:53\n\n\n\n16:10 bus arriving Wolverhampton at 17:21\, then Train at 17:41 arriving Shrewsbury at 18:21\n\n\n\n16:25 bus arriving Wolverhampton at 17:35\, then Train at 17:57 arriving Shrewsbury at 18:47\n\n\n\n\nNOTE: Please double check your train and/or bus times just in case there are any mistakes with the above times. \n\n\n\nPUBS \n\n\n\nFor anyone getting to Stourbridge earlier than 11:30 when the main group arrives\, there is also a Spoons in town (Chequers – open at 8:00) and another GBG pub (Hop Vault – open at 11:00).  \n\n\n\nThe Seven Stars Black Country Ales pub in Oldswinford will be our final stop. SUMMARY:Public Transport Group Trip to Ludlow
DESCRIPTION:Shrewsbury & West Shropshire CAMRA social and beer scoring trip by public transport from Shrewsbury to Ludlow. Members and non-members welcome! \n\n\n\nThe final PTG trip of the year will be to Ludlow on Thursday 18th December. Ludlow is one of our most popular PTG destinations and we will have 16 pubs serving real ale to choose from in or near the town centre\, including two Good Beer Guide pubs. The Olde Bull Ring Tavern and the Compasses have also just re-opened\, but the George is still closed. \n\n\n\nTravel Information \n\n\n\nMost people travelling from Shrewsbury and beyond will be getting to Ludlow by train\, leaving a few minutes walk from Ludlow railway station to Ludlow Brewery\, which will be our first beer stop. The other option is by bus\, which takes 1 hr 15 mins and drops you off by the railway station. \n\n\n\nShrewsbury to Ludlow by Train:   From platform 4\, get the 10:47 which arrives in Ludlow at 11:17 \n\n\n\nShrewsbury to Ludlow by Bus:    From Stand N at Shrewsbury Bus Station\, take the Minsterley Motors 435 bus at 9:55 arriving in Ludlow adjacent to the railway station at 11:10 \n\n\n\nLudlow to Shrewsbury by Train:   Choice of either the 16:20 arriving in Shrewsbury at 16:54\, or the 16:52 arriving in Shrewsbury at 17:24\, or the 17:19 arriving in Shrewsbury at 17:46\, or the 17:43 arriving in Shrewsbury at 18:18 \n\n\n\nLudlow to Shrewsbury by Bus:    Minsterley Motors 435 bus from outside the Compasses pub on Corve Street either at 15:55 arriving in Shrewsbury bus station at 17:11\, or at 16:55 arriving in Shrewsbury at 18:11 \n\n\n\nPubs \n\n\n\nA general order of pubs is shown below. We will meet at Ludlow Brewery around 11:15am and stay there until around midday. Members and non-members welcome! \n\n\n\nFor those that haven’t been before\, Whittington is a picturesque village near Oswestry with two pleasant pubs\, the Narrow Boat Inn near Welsh Frankton is in a superb position next to the canal\, and Ellesmere has an interesting range of pubs including the White Hart\, a regular Good Beer Guide entry. The Black Lion has recently reopened in Ellesmere\, so that will be worth checking out too. \n\n\n\nWe will be going to 2 pubs in Whittington\, 1 near Welsh Frankton\, and up to 7 pubs in Ellesmere. Due to bus timings\, we will get just under an hour in each of the first 3 pubs\, but then just over two hours to do as many Ellesmere pubs as we can fit in. SUMMARY:Public Transport Group Trip to Liverpool
DESCRIPTION:Social trip by public transport from Shrewsbury to Liverpool. The second of this year’s out-of-area PTG trips. Members and non-members welcome! \n\n\n\nSuggested train is the 09:26 from Shrewsbury to Chester. Then onwards on the 10:31 from Chester\, arriving Liverpool Central at 11:13. The first pub is an eight minute walk from there. The Anytime Day Return from Shrewsbury to Chester is £16.60 which has no restrictions on outward and return times to/from Chester. Shrewsbury booking office also sells the Merseyrail Day Saver All Areas for £6.20. \n\n\n\nWe will start at Liverpool Central station and walk up the hill to the Philharmonic which opens at 11:00. From there will go to the White Hart a former club which opened as a pub in January last year. To the rear is the Engineer\, part of the same building but has a different ambience and on the last visit\, different beers. \n\n\n\nNext stop the Queen of Hope Street a former restaurant which became a pub in September 2023. A short walk takes us to the St Peter’s Tavern\, a former night club which became a pub in November last year. On to the Monro\, taken over and renovated in August last year. Next the Red Lion converted from a terraced house in 2022. Then an old favourite the Vines (the Big House) renovated in 2023. \n\n\n\nThe connection linking the above pubs\, apart from the Philharmonic\, is they are all run by the same Pub Co. and all offer a CAMRA discount of 10%. Our progress between the pubs will pass other temptations including the Cracke. Unfortunately the Ale House\, which was meant to have re-opened\, is still shut\, so we will be visiting Housmans\, the Kings Arms and the Bucks Head. \n\n\n\nThen on to the Yew Tree at All Stretton on the 15:30 bus. SUMMARY:Public Transport Group Trip to Sedgley and Wolverhampton
DESCRIPTION:Social trip by public transport from Shrewsbury to Sedgley and Wolverhampton. This is the second of our ‘out of area’ PTG trips that we do in January and February each year. Members and non-members welcome! \n\n\n\nSuggested train is the 10:30 Shrewsbury to Wolverhampton. The anytime day return fare appears to be £12.30. On arrival at Wolverhampton we will make our way to the old tram stop in Bilston Street and get the No. 1 bus to Sedgley getting off at the Crown public house. \n\n\n\nA short walk takes us to the Beacon Hotel\, home of Sarah Hughes beers. The pub should have three of their beers on plus two guests. \n\n\n\nWhen we are ready to move on we will return to the centre of Sedgley and visit the Swan Inn. The pub re-opened in January and should have six beers on including Kinver. \n\n\n\nOnce again when we are ready to move on we’ll return to Wolverhampton. Members and non-members welcome! \n\n\n\nSuggested itinerary is as follows:  \n\n\n\nShip & Mitre\, 133 Dale Street;  \n\n\n\nExcelsior\, 121 Dale Street;  \n\n\n\nVernon Arms\, 69 Dale Street;  \n\n\n\nThomas Rigby’s\, 23 Dale Street;  \n\n\n\nLady of Mann\, 19 Dale Street;  \n\n\n\nSaddle Inn\, 13 Dale Street;  \n\n\n\nHole in Ye Wall\, 4 Hackins Hey;  \n\n\n\nDenbeigh Castle\, 10 Hackins Hey \n\n\n\nAll offer a good selection of cask beers although the Saddle will probably only have national brands. All open at 12:00 with the exception of the Ship which opens at 11:00\, making it our first visit. \n\n\n\nSuggested train is the 09:26 from Shrewsbury to Chester. Then onwards on the 10:31 from Chester arriving Liverpool Lime Street at 11:13. The first pub is an eight minute walk from there. The Anytime Day Return from Shrewsbury to Chester is £15.90 which has no restrictions on outward and return times to/from Chester. Shrewsbury booking office also sells the Merseyrail Day Saver All Areas for £5.95. Suggested return is from Moorfields station which gives an opportunity to visit the excellent Lion pub on the way. \n\n\n\nFor those living north of Shrewsbury who are travelling to Liverpool via Crewe\, the 08:57 from Wem / 09:06 from Whitchurch will get to Liverpool Lime Street at 10:42. DESCRIPTION:Social and beer scoring trip by public transport from Shrewsbury to Ludlow. Note this trip has been moved from the 14th December. Members and non-members welcome! \n\n\n\nOutward train 10:40 from Shrewsbury arrives Ludlow 11:09. For those who prefer to use their bus pass\, the 09:55 435 from Shrewsbury bus station gets to Ludlow railway station at 11:10. \n\n\n\nSuggested return trains to enable onward bus connections from Shrewsbury are 16:19\, which arrives in Shrewsbury at 16:48\, or 16:52 arrives 17:24. The 15:55 bus from outside the Compasses arrives in Shrewsbury at 17:11. \n\n\n\nFirst port of call the Railway Shed (Ludlow Brewery bar). For those who don’t know\, there is an extra pub to visit following the re-opening of the George in the market place. DESCRIPTION:Social and beer scoring trip by public transport from Shrewsbury to Whitchurch.  \n\n\n\nOutward travel from Shrewsbury railway station is on the 10:19 train arriving Whitchurch 10:47\, returning on the 16:29 train arriving Shrewsbury 16:50. \n\n\n\nFor those who would prefer to use their bus passes the 511 bus leaves the bus station at 09:45 arriving Whitchurch at 11:06. The return bus is at 15:22 arriving in Shrewsbury at 16:53. \n\n\n\nFirst call will be the White Bear\, followed by the Black Bear\, then across to the Cock & Greyhound and back down the High Street. The last stop will be the Wheatsheaf.
