SUMMARY:Public Transport Group Trip to Oswestry
DESCRIPTION:Social and beer scoring trip by public transport from Shrewsbury to Oswestry. Please note this is a Friday trip. Members and non-members welcome! \n\n\n\nOutward travel is on the 11:00 X5 arriving at Oswestry at 12:00. Note that this is a change from the bus we used to catch at 10:30\, as Arriva have changed the service frequency to every 45 minutes after the peak. However\, for those who would prefer to breakfast at the Wilfred Owen\, an earlier bus leaves Shrewsbury at 10:15 arriving in Oswestry at 11:15. \n\n\n\nAccording to What Pub the town centre now has only 10 cask beer outlets\, 8 fewer than pre-pandemic days. The suggested route is as follows\, which with a few judicious halves\, should enable a score for all the pubs. \n\n\n\nWilfred Owen\, Coach House (before they get busy with diners)\, Bailey Head (CAMRA Pub of the Year)\, Plough\, Griffin\, Fox\, Wynnstay Hotel\, Oak Inn\, Bell\, Black Lion (opens at 16:00). \n\n\n\nBuses back from outside the Black Lion are 16:40 arriving in Shrewsbury at 17:40\, or 17:25 arriving in Shrewsbury at 18:20. \n\n\n\nFor more information about our Public Transport Group (PTG) trips\, please see the About Our Events page.

SUMMARY:Public Transport Group Trip to Liverpool
DESCRIPTION:Social trip by public transport from Shrewsbury to Liverpool. The second of this year’s out-of-area PTG trips. Members and non-members welcome! \n\n\n\nSuggested train is the 09:26 from Shrewsbury to Chester. Then onwards on the 10:31 from Chester\, arriving Liverpool Central at 11:13. The first pub is an eight minute walk from there. The Anytime Day Return from Shrewsbury to Chester is £16.60 which has no restrictions on outward and return times to/from Chester. Shrewsbury booking office also sells the Merseyrail Day Saver All Areas for £6.20. \n\n\n\nWe will start at Liverpool Central station and walk up the hill to the Philharmonic which opens at 11:00. From there will go to the White Hart a former club which opened as a pub in January last year. To the rear is the Engineer\, part of the same building but has a different ambience and on the last visit\, different beers. \n\n\n\nNext stop the Queen of Hope Street a former restaurant which became a pub in September 2023. A short walk takes us to the St Peter’s Tavern\, a former night club which became a pub in November last year. On to the Monro\, taken over and renovated in August last year. Next the Red Lion converted from a terraced house in 2022. Then an old favourite the Vines (the Big House) renovated in 2023. \n\n\n\nThe connection linking the above pubs\, apart from the Philharmonic\, is they are all run by the same Pub Co. and all offer a CAMRA discount of 10%. Our progress between the pubs will pass other temptations including the Cracke. Members and non-members welcome! \n\n\n\nOutward train 10:59 from Shrewsbury arrives Shifnal 11:23. The plan is to visit the pubs in the order below\, although we may have to stagger our visit to the micropub depending on how many there are of us. \n\n\n\nWhat Pub information for opening times and beer selection is as follows:- \n\n\n\nPark House: 11:00 – Hotel with one beer \n\n\n\nKings Yard: 12:00 – Micropub with four beers \n\n\n\nCrown: 12:00 – Four changing local beers \n\n\n\nPlough: 12:00 – Four changing beers \n\n\n\nWheatsheaf: 12:00 – Marstons range \n\n\n\nJaspers Arms: 12:00 – Four beers including Holden’s Golden Glow \n\n\n\nAnvil: 12:00 – Black Country pub with eight beers \n\n\n\nWinking Frog: 15:00 – Young persons pub. DESCRIPTION:Social and beer scoring trip by public transport from Shrewsbury to the Strettons. Note that the PTG trips for September\, October and November have been changed round to accommodate a visit to the Stretton Ale House in Church Stretton which was meant to re-open in October. This October trip is now on Thursday 17th instead of the Friday. Members and non-members welcome! \n\n\n\nWe start with Minsterley Motors bus No. 435 at 10:55 from Stand N at the bus station. We arrive at Little Stretton at 11:41 for the Green Dragon\, (11:30) then walk on to the Ragleth Inn (12:00). \n\n\n\nNext\, we get the 12:50 bus to Church Stretton arriving 12:55. Unfortunately the Ale House\, which was meant to have re-opened\, is still shut\, so we will be visiting Housmans\, the Kings Arms and the Bucks Head. \n\n\n\nThen on to the Yew Tree at All Stretton on the 15:30 bus. Members and non-members welcome! \n\n\n\nOutward bus is the 10:05 from Stand N at Shrewsbury bus station. We will arrive at Salop Street Jcn\, Bishops Castle\, at 11:03. The Castle Hotel opens at 11:00\, then on to the Three Tuns and the Six Bells. \n\n\n\nWe will then get the 13:30 bus from opposite the Boar’s Head\, arriving at Pontesbury at 14:03. A short walk down Chapel Street brings us to the Plough which opens at 14:00\, from there we walk to the Nag’s Head. \n\n\n\nThe bus back to Shrewsbury will be the 16:15 from the stop outside the Nag’s Head arriving at Shrewsbury bus station at 16:40. \n\n\n\nIt is recommended to double-check the details on this page a day or so before the trip starts\, just in case any of the arrangements have changed. Pubs available to visit before 16:00 will be the Swan\, Red Lion and Market Hotel. DESCRIPTION:Social trip by public transport from Shrewsbury to Sedgley and Wolverhampton. This is the second of our ‘out of area’ PTG trips that we do in January and February each year. Members and non-members welcome! \n\n\n\nSuggested train is the 10:30 Shrewsbury to Wolverhampton. The anytime day return fare appears to be £12.30. On arrival at Wolverhampton we will make our way to the old tram stop in Bilston Street and get the No. 1 bus to Sedgley getting off at the Crown public house. \n\n\n\nA short walk takes us to the Beacon Hotel\, home of Sarah Hughes beers. The pub should have three of their beers on plus two guests. \n\n\n\nWhen we are ready to move on we will return to the centre of Sedgley and visit the Swan Inn. The pub re-opened in January and should have six beers on including Kinver. \n\n\n\nOnce again when we are ready to move on we’ll return to Wolverhampton. Members and non-members welcome! \n\n\n\nSuggested itinerary is as follows:  \n\n\n\nShip & Mitre\, 133 Dale Street;  \n\n\n\nExcelsior\, 121 Dale Street;  \n\n\n\nVernon Arms\, 69 Dale Street;  \n\n\n\nThomas Rigby’s\, 23 Dale Street;  \n\n\n\nLady of Mann\, 19 Dale Street;  \n\n\n\nSaddle Inn\, 13 Dale Street;  \n\n\n\nHole in Ye Wall\, 4 Hackins Hey;  \n\n\n\nDenbeigh Castle\, 10 Hackins Hey \n\n\n\nAll offer a good selection of cask beers although the Saddle will probably only have national brands. All open at 12:00 with the exception of the Ship which opens at 11:00\, making it our first visit. \n\n\n\nSuggested train is the 09:26 from Shrewsbury to Chester. Then onwards on the 10:31 from Chester arriving Liverpool Lime Street at 11:13. The first pub is an eight minute walk from there. The Anytime Day Return from Shrewsbury to Chester is £15.90 which has no restrictions on outward and return times to/from Chester. Shrewsbury booking office also sells the Merseyrail Day Saver All Areas for £5.95. Suggested return is from Moorfields station which gives an opportunity to visit the excellent Lion pub on the way. \n\n\n\nFor those living north of Shrewsbury who are travelling to Liverpool via Crewe\, the 08:57 from Wem / 09:06 from Whitchurch will get to Liverpool Lime Street at 10:42.
