Branch Memories
We thought we’d put together a page on the website to display old photos and documents related to beer, pubs and people in our branch area. More will be added when we come across them and get them scanned in. If you have any that you think would be of interest, please contact the Website Coordinator using the email webmaster@saws.camra.org.uk.
For information about the Shrewsbury and West Shropshire CAMRA branch, including a brief description of our history, please see the Our Branch page. To see archive material related to the Shrewsbury Beer Festival, please look at the Previous Shrewsbury Beer Festivals page.

1978
Real Beer in Salop
This was the first guide to real ale pubs in Shropshire, produced by CAMRA in 1978. It lists over 500 pubs in the area, along with details on which beers they sold and whether they were in the Good Beer Guide at the time.
1988
Wem Brewery Closure
Photos from the day of a march through Wem in January 1988, to protest the planned closure of Wem Brewery. Although we don’t have any photos from the actual march here yet, apparently around 200 people took part, lead by the Mayor and Local Councillors. Unfortunately, despite everyone’s efforts, the brewery still closed a few weeks later in Febraury 1988. 1989
Wrekin Beer Festival
Although just outside our patch, the third Wrekin Beer Festival took place in Oakengates Town Hall on the 17th and 18th of February 1989.
The Foreword in the brochure, by Festival Organiser Barry Malone, makes it clear that this festival was due to take place the previous October but due to a “c**k up” had to be postponed.
There is also a warning that the beers at this festival were going to be far stronger than at previous Wrekin festivals – the words “YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED” brought the Foreword to an ominous end.
Pubs
Business Cards of Former Pubs
Here’s a collection of business cards, mainly from Shropshire pubs that are sadly no longer pubs. One or two of them are still pubs but either under new management or up for sale, so the business cards will relate to previous owners. Click on a card to view a bigger picture, or click the Load More button to see more cards.
Breweries
Three Tuns Brewery
An old postcard with a photo of Three Tuns Brewery in Bishops Castle. There is no date on the postcard but the old phone number of Bishops Castle 229 might help in dating the picture.
