Our Branch
Below is a bit of background information on the Shrewsbury and West Shropshire CAMRA branch. For more information about the types of activities we are involved in, please see the What We Do page.
Branch History
After CAMRA was created in 1971, a Shropshire CAMRA branch was formed. However, due to the size of Shropshire and the fact that by 1974 there were already over 450 members, it was agreed that branches were also needed for the two biggest towns of Shrewsbury and Telford.
So in April 1974, the Shrewsbury CAMRA branch was officially created. A local newspaper reporter was there for the very first meeting, and a copy of the article can be seen here. A couple of years later, the Telford branch was expanded to cover eastern Shropshire, and our branch received the western side. Hence we became the Shrewsbury and West Shropshire CAMRA branch or SaWS for short.
However, for a while after Wem Brewery was closed down in 1988, we gave ourselves the unofficial title of the Shrewsbury and Wem CAMRA branch in solidarity with the people of Wem as a protest against the closure. In fact, when we organised the first Shrewsbury Beer Festival in 1990, the festival flyer shows it as being run by Shrewsbury and Wem CAMRA.
Over the years, we have grown into a sizeable branch with around 700 members, a significant number of which enthusiastically keep the branch running so that it can promote CAMRA’s aims in this region. We have continued to organise the Shrewsbury Beer Festival, and have just had a very successful 32nd festival in September 2024.
We have also been active in campaigning against local pub closures, and have helped save a number of pubs important to the community. Our main involvement these days is in helping communities apply for ACV’s (Asset of Community Value) to prevent redevelopment, and also advising on steps towards community purchases of pubs. A great example of this is the White Lion community pub in Ash Magna near Whitchurch, which has been going from strength to strength and won a Countryside Alliance award for the Best Country Pub in the UK in 2023.
Branch Area
The branch covers the western half of Shropshire, nestled up against the Welsh border, with Cheshire to the north and Herefordshire to the south. The main towns in the branch area are Shrewsbury, Ludlow, Oswestry and Whitchurch. We share the picturesque county of Shropshire with the Telford and East Shropshire branch, which contains the sub-branches of Market Drayton and Bridgnorth.
CAMRA is split into different regions, and our branch is part of the West Midlands region, which covers most branches in the following counties: Shropshire, Staffordshire, West Midlands, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Herefordshire.
Our neighbouring CAMRA branches consist of Telford and East Shropshire (including Market Drayton and Bridgnorth sub-branches), Herefordshire, Radnorshire, Montgomeryshire, Chester and South Clywd, and South Cheshire. These are shown on the following map – clicking on the branch name on the map will take you to the branch website for that area.
Branch Structure
The branch is run by a Committee with the help of other members who contribute their ideas, knowledge, time and enthusiasm. The Committee consists of a Chair, Vice-chair, Secretary and Treasurer, and quite a few other Officers who focus on specific areas, such as membership or publicity. The list of Committee posts and the members currently in those posts can be found in the Branch Contacts section of the Contact Us page.
If you would like to help with running the branch, please see the Getting Involved page for more details. Any vacant Committee posts are highlighted in the Branch Contacts list but even if all posts are filled, Committee members always welcome any offer of help.
Branch Management
We have a Committee meeting once a month, usually held in a pub in Shrewsbury. This is normally attended by Committee members but all branch members are welcome to come along. The latest local, regional and national news is discussed relating to beer, pubs and CAMRA. Any officers present will inform the Committee of any updates related to their particular role. Any organisational matters will be will also be discussed and provisionally agreed, some of which may need to be discussed and ratified by branch members at the next Branch meeting.
Branch meetings are also held every month, usually two weeks after the Committee meeting. The agenda is very similar to the one followed at the Committee meetings. The Branch is informed of latest news and Officers give the latest updates from their role. Everyone has the opportunity to discuss, give feedback and suggest changes. More important matters may need to be voted on by all members present. The Committee will then take account of all feedback and adjust policy or organisational matters appropriately.
All members and non-members are welcome to attend Branch meetings, so please feel free to turn up and meet some fellow ale enthusiasts, and also find out more about the Branch’s activities. See our What’s On page for dates and locations of our next meetings.
