Young Members

Welcome to the Young Members Page!

CAMRA isn’t just for older folks you know! Achieving CAMRA’s aims can be for younger folk too, especially if they are combined with having a bit of fun.

Does anyone fancy Beerienteering? Perhaps a ‘pubs’ quiz, visit to a beer festival or the ever popular Adventure-Ale (which involved zip wires amongst other things). Whilst these things are aimed at having fun, they also support pubs and the Real Ale industry too. On the face of things these may seem just like pub trails, but the general idea is to get people trying pubs and beers that they might not normally try. Right now pubs need our support more than ever, so getting more people into them is important. Plus, if folk are trying new beers, it increases their enjoyment of Real Ale and encourages them to seek out other new beers and pubs which in turn helps pubs and the brewery industry yet further.

Did you enjoy the beer you drank? How about submitting your scores online; it all helps when compiling the Good Beer Guide. CAMRA members can enter their scores on the WhatPub website.

Doing the things that CAMRA needs to do needn’t be boring. Why not get involved? Contact youngpersons@saws.camra.org.uk to find out more.

Young Members' Events

From time to time we organise events that are aimed more at the younger members of the branch. These will generally be fun activities but will still allow for promoting CAMRA, its aims and support the work it does. Just because you are on a pub trail, completing a silly challenge in each pub, doesn’t mean you can’t submit some beer scores whilst you’re at it! Generally these events will be held at the weekend so that those who are at work/uni etc in the week can attend.

Coming Up:

No events specifically for young members are currently scheduled but another one will be happening soon. You are welcome to come to other events, so please have a look at the What’s On page for details.

Last Event – Saturday 18th November

Young Members’ Pubs Quiz Trail

Thanks to everyone who came on the Young Members’ Pubs Quiz Trail round Shrewsbury. A very enjoyable afternoon was had by all who attended.

Check back here or have a look at our What’s On page for details of upcoming events.

Beer Festivals

Fancy trying lots of different beers but don’t want to walk around loads of pubs to do so? Why not visit one of CAMRA’s or a local venue’s beer festivals. These happen all over the country virtually every weekend. From small festivals in pubs to big festivals with hundreds of beers, there is something for everyone. Check out the beer festival list on the CAMRA website, or consider helping out at ours in Shrewsbury.

Beer Scoring

Ever wondered how pubs that get into the Good Beer Guide are chosen? Well, by members scoring the beers on offer is how. Whenever a member has a beer in a pub, they can log onto CAMRA’s WhatPub site and submit a score for that particular beer in that particular pub.

At the end of the year, all the pubs which have an average score of 3.5 out of 5 will get considered for entry. The more scores each pub has, the more accurate the results will be. Whenever you go for a drink, consider submitting a score! Have a look at our guidelines on beer scoring here.

Getting More Involved

The easiest way to get involved is to volunteer at a beer festival – most festival organisers will never turn away a willing pair of hands! Contact the organising branch for more details. You can always come to a branch meeting and meet the folks there, who will be happy to show you what’s what.
