For those that haven’t been before, Whittington is a picturesque village near Oswestry with two pleasant pubs, the Narrow Boat Inn near Welsh Frankton is in a superb position next to the canal, and Ellesmere has an interesting range of pubs including the White Hart, a regular Good Beer Guide entry. The Black Lion has recently reopened in Ellesmere, so that will be worth checking out too.
